Pain Treatment Trap #1 From Toronto TMJ Dentist

Thinking Your Pain Will Simply "Go Away" On It's Own Is A Big Trap

Many cases Of Headaches, Migraines, Facial Pain, Jaw Pain, Neck Pain and other types of pain will NOT simply "go away" forever all on their own.

So you need to search for the type of health care practitioner and treatment that you think will be able to help you the best.

A lot of people with headaches have what is referred to as "Neuromuscular Tension." This would include headaches and pain that are caused by a TMJ Disorder. If you have this type of headache or pain then a specific type of treatment will remove this tension and then reduce the severity of your headaches or other types of pain. With proper treatment these types of headaches and pain can be removed permanently.

Here is a brief case history of two patients who took different paths

Two women came to see Toronto area TMJ dentist Dr. Goodfellow about two years ago. Each of these two women had a number of problems. Both had headaches. Both had a very difficult time getting a good night's sleep. Both found it very hard to even concentrate during the day.

The first woman named Jennifer also noticed subtle pain on the side of her face as well as a cracking sound when she opened her mouth. Her pain also extended from her head down to her shoulders and even her back.

But in only 3 weeks after treatment began her headaches and all pain was gone. Once again she could concentrate. She could finally get a good night's sleep again. The cracking sounds in her jaw stopped. It didn't hurt to chew her food anymore. And she could even sit up straight again.

With the second woman though, her situation today is completely different than the first woman. Her chronic headaches, concentration problems and sleep disorder still exist. And because of this she now looks much older than her real age.

The only difference between these two women is that the second woman only "wished" her pain and related problems would go away. But the first woman took action to find the treatment she needed and then she followed the recommendations of her TMJ dentist.

Pain Treatment Trap #2 From Toronto TMJ Dentist

Very Often Headaches, Migraines, Facial Pain, Jaw Pain and Neck Pain Are NOT Just A "Minor" Problem or "Stress" Related (Part 1)

If you have recurring or chronic pain of some sort over an extended period of time this is often not just a minor problem. There are two reasons for this.

First, depending on the severity of your pain and the length of time you have the pain, the disruption this can cause in your life can be profound. It can cause you to miss out on everything from family activities, to your favourite hobbies or activities and even work.

For these reasons alone it is worth it to do whatever it takes to find the treatment for pain relief you are looking for.

Just as important, if not more important though, is the fact that many cases of chronic pain are not simply caused by stress in someones' life. It seems like most people have highly stressful lives these days, but not everyone has chronic pain such as headaches. So it isn't just stress alone that causes all cases of headaches.

Very Often Headaches, Migraines, Facial Pain, Jaw Pain and Neck Pain Are NOT Just A "Minor" Problem or "Stress" Related (Part 2)

The second reason why many cases of pain are not just a minor problem is that it can often be a serious structural problem. Not only do these structural problems not get better on their own but they are often degenerative.

Degenerative structural problems such as a TMJ disorder generally get worse over time. So the longer someone waits to get proper treatment, the worse the pain gets and the more difficult it gets to provide treatment that actually brings pain relief.

Many People Mistakenly Believe Too Much In "Pain Relievers"

If the root cause of your pain is because of a structural problem like a TMJ disorder then it is impossible for pain relievers to correct the root cause of that problem.

If pain relievers were a permanent cure then the pain would not return later after the effects of a pill or lotion wore off. Pain relievers merely temporarily disable your body's ability to sense pain.

And, the down sides of taking too many pain relievers for too long are enormous.

It's been reported that long term use of pain relievers could cause strokes and heart problems, kidney damage, liver failure and more.

On top of this, if the real cause of your pain is structural then your core problem is very likely getting worse every day you are taking pain relievers instead of getting your structural problem corrected.

Many People Suffer In Pain For YEARS Longer Than They Need To Because They Simply Do NOT Get A Proper Diagnosis And Then The Proper Treatment Which Comes From That Diagnosis

Many people with long term headaches, migraines, facial pain, neck pain or jaw pain have been told, "Your pain is all in your head" when medications would not relieve their pain long term.

Countless others have been incorrectly diagnosed by sometimes a dozen doctors or specialists.

All of this has happened for the simple reason that the proper connection was not made between a patient's pain and a TMJ disorder.

A very large percentage of headaches, migraines, facial pain and neck pain is due to a structural problem and/or neuromuscular problem. A TMJ disorder is one type of neuromuscular problem.

When the jaw bone is misaligned with the skull bone in the area just in front of the ears called the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), this is called a TMJ disorder. Another cause of TMJ syndrome is when any of the muscles, ligaments or nerves connected to the TMJ are damaged in one way or another.

This is the most complex joint in the body and these soft tissues radiate outward from the TMJ to many areas of the head and body. And, if these tissue are damaged such as with a TMJ disorder, the pain can be felt in many areas far away from the TMJ.

Because of this complexity it is a very good idea for anyone with chronic headaches, migraines, facial pain, jaw pain, neck pain or any other type of long term pain to at least get a proper diagnosis from a TMJ dentist.
